Feathers from Paris meet feathers from the Highlands. Three Lido dancers join a Huli group to compete at the Mount Hagen Show. A film by Jean-Marie Barrère and Marc Dozier for France 5.
On one of his trips to France, the Huli chief Mundiya Kepanga met the director of the Lido, the famous Paris cabaret. He convinced him that the Lido and his clan shared the same love of feathers — and that they should enter the dance competition of the Mount Hagen Show together, a matter of prestige for his clan.
Three Lido dancers made the journey to the Highlands. Danse avec les Papous follows their preparation with the Huli dancers, the meeting of two worlds of costume and dance, and the day of the show.
The Mount Hagen Show
Every August, the Mount Hagen Show brings together dozens of groups from across the Highlands in full ceremonial dress. It is one of the great festivals of the country — and a place where access, security and timing all have to be prepared weeks in advance.
