In the same France 5 special, “Papouasie, la dernière frontière”, a sequence in Huli country, where clan conflicts are still part of life.
The Huli live in Hela Province, in the Highlands, and number more than 250,000 people. Known for the wigs of human hair and the painted faces of their men, they also live with clan conflicts that can last for years.
The sequence, part of the 90-minute Échappées belles special Papouasie, la dernière frontière broadcast by France 5 in April 2012, looks at one of these tribal wars.
A subject that needs care
A conflict between clans is not filmed like a festival. It requires the agreement of the leaders on each side, an understanding of the situation that day, and the constant judgement of people who know the region. Safety comes first — for the crew and for the communities.
