Volcanoes and fire dances
East New Britain
Rabaul sits inside a caldera beneath the Tavurvur volcano, which buried much of the town in 1994. Inland, the Baining people perform their night fire dances in giant bark-cloth masks. Tunnels and relics recall the Japanese base of the Second World War.
