Highlands festivals: when they happen and how to film them

By Marc Dozier

Hundreds of groups in full ceremonial dress, painted faces and feather headdresses: the great shows are some of the most spectacular events in the Pacific. Here is when they take place and how to film them well.

Every year, communities from across the country travel for days to perform at the big cultural shows. For a crew, they offer an extraordinary concentration of people, costumes and traditions in one place — and a real challenge to film well.

The main dates

Mount Hagen Show (Western Highlands) — every August.

Goroka Show (Eastern Highlands) — around Independence Day, 16 September. In 2026 it took place from 18 to 20 September, for its 70th edition.

Sepik River Crocodile Festival (East Sepik) — in August.

National Mask Festival (East New Britain, Kokopo) — in July, with the Baining fire dances.

Exact dates change from year to year and are often confirmed late. We update this article each season.

The best images are not in the arena

The shows themselves are crowded, and every camera points in the same direction. The strongest moments usually happen earlier: groups dressing and painting in the early morning, rehearsals in the villages in the days before, the journey to the show. We arrange these moments with the groups in advance.

Access and respect

Organisers may ask for a media or filming fee, and each group has its own leaders. We introduce the crew, agree on what can be filmed and on any contribution to the group, and make sure performers know where their images will be seen.

Practical tips

— Book flights and rooms months ahead: towns fill up during the shows

— Arrive a few days early to film preparations and rehearsals

— Plan early-morning sessions for the best light and calm

— Keep camera kit light and secure in the crowds

— Agree with each group before filming close-ups
